Israeli President Isaac Herzog echoed Prime Minister Netanyahu's calls, saying the Iranian people now have the opportunity to "rise up and change" the regime in Tehran.
"I'm quite convinced that what we've shown so far can continue dramatically and can change the course of things in Iran as well. Ultimately, the Iranian people have been oppressed for decades and we all believe that they are fed up and that this is their chance to rise up and change the regime ," Herzog told CNN's Wolf Blitzer today.
However, Herzog quickly clarified that regime change is not one of the objectives of Israel's campaign in Iran.
"Our objective is to eliminate the Iranian nuclear program ," he stressed.
Israel's attack on Iran has caused further damage to Ayatollah Ali Khamenei's regime, which was already reeling from Israel's attacks on its regional proxies since 2023.
Over the weekend, a senior US official told CNN that the Israelis had an opportunity to assassinate Khamenei, but the United States communicated to Israel that President Donald Trump opposed the plan.
Asked about Israel's alleged plan to assassinate the Iranian leader, Herzog said: "I am the head of state. I am not the head of the executive branch and I leave this matter to those who have made or will make all the decisions in this war."
But the president stressed that under Khamenei's leadership, a "terrorist infrastructure" has "spread throughout the world," from the Houthis in Yemen and Hezbollah in Lebanon to "terrorist cells in Latin America."
