"If Donald Trump wins the presidential election, he will leave NATO.",
This is what his former adviser for national security, John Bolton, warned in an interview with the newspapers "Süddeutsche Zeitung" (München) and "Tages Anzeiger" (Zürich).
According to Bolton, Trump was very close to withdrawing from the world's largest military alliance during its summit in 2018.
Trump "doesn't want European dependence on Russian gas and oil, nor trade agreements with the EU", says the former senior official, who left the post of adviser after just one year due to disagreements with the Republican.
He insists that Trump's recent statements against NATO, Bolton says, should be taken very seriously. The former head of the White House complained that the Europeans are not paying enough into the NATO budget. John insists that withdrawing from NATO would be a disaster for both the US and the North Atlantic Alliance, but Trump, he said, does not understand these things.
"You can't convince Trump with arguments, because he doesn't care about content, but about attention. He wants the biggest headlines ever written by an American president: that he pulled the US out of NATO," says Bolton. Trump stunned allies last month with statements that challenged NATO's unitary character. Speaking at a campaign rally in South Carolina, he stated that the US may not protect allies that do not spend enough on defense if they are attacked by Russia.
