UN Security Council, China message to the West: Don't add fuel to the fire,

China warns UN Security Council countries not to "add fuel to the fire", referring to the war in Ukraine.

Ma Zhaoxu, the vice minister of foreign affairs, says that China has facilitated peace talks "in its own way" and that Beijing has played a "positive and constructive role" in resolving the conflict in Ukraine. He referred to the Ukrainian "crisis" and not the "war" of Russian aggression during his speech.

A prolonged and extended crisis in Ukraine is in nobody's interest in light of the current situation. Ma says that it is "important to stick to the general direction of the political solution" and calls to "avoid pouring fuel on the fire".

Parties to the conflict must strictly respect international humanitarian law, follow the principles of necessity, distinction and proportionality, protect civilians and civilian infrastructure, and provide prompt safe and unhindered humanitarian access in order to reduce civilian suffering.
