Cigarette smuggling, the former director of the police in Montenegro is arrested

The former director of the Montenegrin Police Slavko Stojanović was arrested on Saturday in Podgorica, by order of the Special State Prosecutor's Office, on suspicion of "abuse of official position in relation to cigarette smuggling".

Montenegrin Interior Minister Danilo Sharanovic said that "the arrest shows that no one is and will not be above the law and that anyone involved in illegal activity will be brought to justice", as he said.

Prime Minister of Montenegro Milojko Spajic welcomed the authorities' decision to arrest Slavko Stojanovic. He said that "the determined fight against organized crime and corruption is a prerequisite for the rule of law and the most important criterion for accelerating the European path" of the country.

Slavko Stojanović was the director of the police of Montenegro from 2013 to 2018. Analysts mention that "during his tenure, more than 40 people were killed as a result of clashes between criminal clans in Montenegro."

In July of this year, the authorities arrested Mr. Stojanović's successor as police director, Veselin Vujović, who served from 2018 to 2020. While from 2020 to 2023, he served as Security Advisor to former President Milo Gjykanović. .

Veselin Vujović is in custody, under suspicion of creating a criminal organization, abuse of office and smuggling.

The Democratic Party of Socialists of former President Djukanović said at the time that former Police Director Veselin Velović was arrested after "unprecedented pressure of outgoing Prime Minister Dritan Abazović on this institution", as she described it.
