Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen has submitted her resignation after her three-party coalition lost a general election, the royal palace said.
Frederiksen will continue to serve until a new government is formed and remains one of the leading candidates to lead the executive in the next term.
"The world is not waiting for us and has become even more unstable since the announcement of the elections. We must find a way to cooperate ," she declared.
Next, a so-called "royal investigator" is expected to be appointed, who will lead consultations between parties on the creation of a new governing majority. Negotiations are expected to be long and complex, and it remains unclear whether the next government will be led again by Frederiksen or by another political figure.
Frederiksen, in power since 2019, had built her campaign on leadership experience and the ability to handle international challenges, including relations with the United States and the European response to the war in Ukraine.
However, the election result reflected domestic discontent. The cost of living crisis dominated voters' concerns, while her immigration policies were criticized by both political wings: some on the left considered them too harsh, while segments of the right saw them as unclear and economically unconvincing.
At the European level, Frederiksen has a reputation for her clear positions on strategic issues, including Greenland and increased defense spending after the war in Ukraine. However, domestically, her negotiating style has been criticized by some as tough, while a section of the electorate has demanded change.
