Ukraine's counterattack, Zelensky: We are making progress in the face of

Ukraine said on Monday that its troops had retaken control of seven villages from Russian forces along a nearly 100-kilometer front in the southeast since the launch of a long-awaited counteroffensive last week.

Despite rain and heavy fighting, Ukrainian forces were making progress on the battlefield, President Volodymyr Zelensky said in a speech on Monday night.

"The battles are tough, but we are making progress and that is crucial," said Mr. Zelensky. "The losses of the enemy are exactly what we need."

The video showed soldiers holding the Ukrainian flag in the village of Storozheve, on the banks of the Mokri Yaly River, which flows north through Russian-controlled territory. Reuters confirmed the location.

On Sunday, Ukraine said its forces to the south had liberated three other nearby villages along the river: Blahodatne, Neskuchne and Makarivka.

Deputy Defense Minister Hanna Maliar said in a Telegram post late Monday that Ukrainian forces had also retaken Levadne and Novodarivkan, about 10 km west of the Mokri Yaly River, as well as Lobkoven, southeast of the city of Zaporizhzhia.

Ms. Maliar said that the troops had advanced a total of 6.5 km and had taken control of an area of 90 square kilometers.

Moscow has yet to officially acknowledge any Ukrainian advances. But several Russian military bloggers confirmed that Ukrainian forces had taken control of Blahodatnes, Neskuchnse and Makarivkas and were moving south.

The Russian defense ministry on Monday repeated last week's assertions that it had repelled attempted offensives in the Donetsk and Zaporizhzhia regions. Eight Ukrainian drones were destroyed and an ammunition depot was hit in eastern Ukraine, the ministry said./VOA
