"Civil war between parties", vote today on the fate of François

"I have no regrets." On the eve of the vote on the confidence motion, which will most likely mark the end of his government, François Bayrou has harshly attacked the political forces, accusing them of being "in a civil war among themselves," but united only by the goal of overthrowing the government.

The French Prime Minister, appointed in January of this year, once again highlighted the dire situation of public finances, justifying the need for a €44 billion maneuver for 2026, and criticizing MPs who are "hostages to party slogans."

Today at 3:00 p.m., the Prime Minister will enter the National Assembly to deliver his political speech. He will not go into details about the budget, but will present the state of public finances and seek prior confidence, so that the draft budget bill can then be discussed article by article. The United Left and the far right have already warned of an irreversible veto, with no room for compromise. The presidential coalition will vote united in favor, while the situation among the Republicans appears divided: the head of the parliamentary group Laurent Wauquiez has given freedom of vote, while the Minister of the Interior, Bruno Retailleau, who is also the party secretary, is inclined not to bring down the government.

The vote on confidence will be held by secret ballot and will be decided by a majority of the votes cast. Bayrou can count on about 210 votes, while the opposition has 353. Possible abstentions from the Republicans would further reduce the prime minister's chances.

La Repubblica writes that if the confidence motion is defeated, Bayrou will be forced to resign to the President of the Republic, opening up a political crisis. From the Élysée Palace there is little certainty about the next steps. Emmanuel Macron “has not yet decided” and is looking for the “right solution” for what seems like an inevitable post-Bayrou period. Sources close to the presidency say that “his priority is the stability of the country”.

In the president's inner circle, there is no confidence in the appointment of the socialist Olivier Faure, who has put himself forward to lead a "left-wing coexistence government", with occasional compromises. La France Insoumise (Unyielding France) has described the proposal as a "scam" and has refused to participate. Jean-Luc Mélenchon is demanding Macron's resignation and is encouraging social mobilization: the "Block Everything" movement is expected to launch on Wednesday, followed by union protests on September 18.

On the other hand, the Rassemblement National (National Rally) is calling for early parliamentary elections. Marine Le Pen, who is expected to learn today the date of the appeal trial for the sentence that made her ineligible, is convinced that she can win the election.
