Lukashenko "imitates" Putin, signs law banning "unfriendly"

Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko signed a law on Saturday banning "unfriendly" media from foreign countries in Belarus, according to a statement from his press service.

It comes after Lukashenko said this week that Wagner chief Yevgeny Prigozhin was in Belarus as part of a brokered deal after his private military group attempted a rebellion against the Kremlin.

"The document aims at improving the mechanisms for the protection of national interests in the media sphere, as well as expanding the means to respond to unfriendly actions against Belarus. The law envisages the possibility of imposing a ban on the activities of foreign media in the territory of the Republic of Belarus in the event that foreign countries show unfriendly actions against the Belarusian media ," the statement on the new law states.

With this law, Lukashenko appears to be emulating Putin, who in the early stages of the war in 2022 signed a censorship law, making it a crime to spread "false" information about the invasion of Ukraine, punishable by up to 15 years in prison for anyone convicted.
