French President Emmanuel Macron paid an official visit to Cyprus, where he participated in a trilateral meeting with Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides and Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, at a time of heightened security tension in the region.
After the meeting ended, the three leaders issued joint statements, with Macron emphasizing that an attack on Cyprus should be considered an attack on all of Europe.
In a public reaction, the French president announced that his visit to Cyprus took place at the invitation of President Christodoulides and in coordination with Greece.
"The security of all Europeans is our common interest. We immediately took solidarity measures towards Cyprus, which was attacked by multiple drones and missiles," Macron declared.
He announced that France has deployed the frigate "Languedoc" and a Mistral air defense unit to the region, as part of measures to strengthen defense and security in the Eastern Mediterranean.
Macron added that another important element of this commitment is the presence in the area of the French aircraft carrier "Charles de Gaulle" and its battle group, which are currently near Cyprus.
"Before returning to Paris, I will go to the aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle to be closely informed about the situation," the French president said.
Macron also touched on tensions in Lebanon, describing the situation as "very worrying" and calling for de-escalation. He demanded that Hezbollah stop the bombing, while also calling on Israel to end its military operations on Lebanese territory as soon as possible.
The French president also announced that the creation of an international maritime security mission in the Strait of Hormuz is being discussed, which will accompany commercial ships and oil tankers, with the aim of guaranteeing freedom of navigation and the gradual resumption of maritime traffic in one of the most important routes for global trade and energy supply.
At the invitation of President Nikos Christodoulides, I am in Cyprus, alongside Greek Prime Minister Kyriákos Mitsotakis.
