The President of the United States Joe Biden began this Sunday a short visit to Vietnam, declaring that the two countries have the opportunity to influence the future of the Indo-Pacific in the coming decades. Biden said that during his one-day visit, he hoped to make progress on climate and economic issues.
"Vietnam and the United States are critical partners in what for us represents a critical period," Biden told the general secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam, Nguyễn Phú Trọng, at the start of the meeting at the party's headquarters.
Trong said the meeting represented a "great opportunity" to expand bilateral relations. He thanked Biden for his invitation to visit Washington soon.
In this meeting, it was announced that Vietnam raised relations with the United States to the level of strategic partnership. Among other countries that Vietnam aims for the same level of relations are China and Russia.
Elevating relations to the same level with the United States also suggests that Vietnam aims to strengthen relations as American and European companies look for alternatives to Chinese factories.
Amid China's economic slowdown and President Xi Jinping's consolidation of political power, President Biden is exploring opportunities to bring more countries closer to America, including Vietnam and Cambodia.
Trade between the United States and Vietnam has increased since 2019. But further progress is limited by the need for improvements in Vietnam's infrastructure, labor skills and governance./VOA
