US President Donald Trump has spoken about the US-Ukraine rare earths deal. He said he told the Ukrainian leader to sign the deal because it would be in the best interest of their country, as Russia is stronger than them.
"I told him it would be a great thing if we could reach a deal on minerals, and he signed it, because Russia is much stronger," Trump said during an interview with Newsnation.
Asked if the minerals deal would "hinder" Russian leader Vladimir Putin, Trump said: "Well, that might be the case."
The two countries signed the agreement in Washington after months of difficult negotiations, with uncertainty that continued until the last moment due to an unexpected problem in the final hours.
The move sealed a deal to create a fund that the Trump administration says will begin paying out about $175 billion given to Ukraine, The Guardian reported.
