March in Belgrade, tens of thousands "occupy" the streets in support

Tens of thousands of students, pupils and citizens marched through the main streets of Belgrade on Friday. The march was the culmination of today's mobilizations and the general strike that took place after the students' call.

The strike was mainly attended by private businesses, bar associations, artists and citizens' groups, while the public sector operated normally, as did most commercial establishments. The march ended outside the public television (RTS) building in support of its journalists, who are facing vulgar attacks by the authorities for covering the student protests.

The latest case was when the President of the Republic, Aleksandar Vučić, in a speech to his supporters in eastern Serbia, described as “damaged” the RTS journalist who covered the student mobilization last Saturday in the city of Niš. The controversial part of Vučić’s speech was broadcast on the main news bulletin of the first channel of the public television without comment, which caused reactions. The RTS administration condemned the behavior of the President of the Republic with a 24-hour delay.

The rally in front of the public television station began symbolically at 19:30, the time when the main news bulletin began. The crowd greeted a group of RTS journalists and technicians who read out their demands to the administration.
Among other things, they demand that the administration publicly apologize for the delayed reaction in defense of its journalists, as well as for the inadequate coverage of the student protests. RTS journalists demand objective reporting without exception and discrimination and demand the resignation of the heads of the news department.

Student protests in Serbia will continue, with a large rally in Belgrade and a blockade of the city center planned for March 15.

Students in Serbia have been protesting for more than three months against corruption.
