A serious shooting has shocked Australia, as 16 people, including a child, were killed on Bondi Beach. The victims ranged in age from 10 to 87, while 40 others were injured.
The bloody incident occurred at a public event marking the start of the Jewish holiday of Hanukkah in the area. New South Wales Police said the incident was being treated as a terrorist incident.
According to authorities, two people, a father and son, were involved in the attack. One of them, a 50-year-old man, was shot by police officers and died at the scene. The second perpetrator, his 24-year-old son, was seriously injured and is in hospital under strict police supervision.
New South Wales Police Commissioner Mel Lanyon said investigations had progressed overnight and that authorities were no longer looking for anyone else involved in the attack.
"The two perpetrators were a father and son, aged 50 and 24 respectively. The 50-year-old died at the scene, while the 24-year-old is in critical condition in hospital," Lanyon said.
New South Wales state Premier Chris Minns confirmed at a press conference in Sydney that 15 innocent people had lost their lives, while the 16th victim was one of the perpetrators of the attack. He said the victims ranged in age from 10 to 87 and that 42 others were still being treated in hospital.
Minns called on citizens to show solidarity in these difficult times, emphasizing that the community must stand united after this tragic event.
"It's important to show them that ordinary Australians are with them and thinking of them, after this horrific and deliberate attack, at an event that was supposed to be celebratory and that they had every right to share with the community at Bondi Beach ," he said.
