The Prime Minister of Italy, Georgia Meloni, at the UN General Assembly summit in New York said that she will not allow Italy to become Europe's refugee camp.
Far-right Prime Minister Meloni said she would not let the country turn into 'Europe's refugee camp'.
Meloni's statement comes after thousands of people sought refuge and landed on the Italian coast.
"The influx of refugees has also led France to tighten controls on its border with Italy," The Guardian reported.
At the UN General Assembly in New York, Giorgia Meloni said the large number of migrants arriving in Lampedusa had put Italy 'under tremendous pressure'.
Lampedusa is a small Sicilian island that for years has been the first port of call for people crossing a dangerous stretch of the Mediterranean Sea from North Africa.
Meloni visited the island of Lampedusa on Sunday together with the president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen.
During the visit, Meloni said that 'Europe's future is at risk' if EU countries do not work together to find 'solutions'.
"Irregular immigration is a European challenge that needs a European response," said Meloni.
