The political strategy appears to be the same: weakening any balancing mechanism against executive power...
The interview that Giorgia Meloni gave to Sky two days ago, in which she agreed with Sergio Mattarella on the need to tone down the referendum campaign, produced another effect on the media and political level. Her statement was eclipsed on the front pages by the intervention of Ignazio La Russa, which came immediately after the head of state's speech.
Mattarella had made a clear reference to the attacks on the High Council of Magistracy, attacks that had not come from the opposition. After that, Meloni published a video directly attacking the justice system. The next day, the president of the Senate stated that he had seen the prime minister's post, that he completely agreed with her and thanked her for her stance.
In this way, the second figure of the state openly aligned himself against the first, supporting the president of the Council of Ministers. This development confirms the way in which this right-wing conceives of institutions and the balance of powers. It also reinforces the idea that the political objective remains the Presidency of the Republic. La Russa's position was so direct that it made Meloni's interview necessary, which distanced itself in tone and content from the recent public messages he had disseminated.
The political strategy appears to be the same: the weakening of any balancing mechanism against the executive power. The so-called model of the directly elected prime minister is under discussion, which aims to limit the role of the Quirinale. A further intervention in the electoral law is also mentioned to strengthen the majoritarian character and discipline parliamentary representation. The justice reform is also being implemented in the same line, which, according to recently published legal analyses, does not have a guaranteeing character, but aims to influence the functioning of the judiciary.
This framework includes measures such as the adoption of preventive control instruments, sending migrants to centers in Albania, warning of a maritime blockade, the provision of a criminal shield that limits control over the actions of law enforcement, as well as the use of special codes and practices for certain categories, including persons suspected of sexual crimes, migrants or activists of social centers.
If the objective is to build forms of justice with immediate execution and based on the presumption of dangerousness, the question arises as to what real function the reform will have, other than the elimination of an institutional opposition. From Meloni's recent statements it emerges that, in this model of democracy with immediate decision-making, the judiciary must adapt to the popular will expressed through the government, even in the formulation of charges.
This model is compared to Hungarian illiberal democracy and the approach followed by Donald Trump. Meloni's intervention on the killing of a French right-wing militant by left-wing activists also falls into the same framework, where she attempted to present the case as a French version of the Kirk affair. She then again mentioned the Red Brigades in the controversy with France, although there is no evidence to support such a connection.
The political debate on the relationship between the government, the Presidency and the judiciary remains open and recent developments deepen the clash between the institutions./ Adapted from "Pamphlet" by " Linkiesta "
