Pope Leo XIV called for at least Christmas Day to be observed as a day of peace in the world. The appeal was made from Castel Gandolfo, before the Christmas holiday.
He said that one of the things that worries him most these days is the fact that Russia seems to have rejected the request for a Christmas ceasefire.
"I once again appeal to all people of good will: let there be, at least on the day of the Savior's birth, a day of peace. Let there be a day of peace throughout the world," the Pope said.
As has become customary, the Pope stopped to speak with a group of journalists from various media outlets and answered their questions.
Among the issues addressed were the Middle East and Ukraine. Speaking of Ukraine, where multiple Russian attacks have hit several regions in recent hours, Pope Leo said: “Among the things that sadden me greatly these days is the fact that Russia seems to have rejected the request for a Christmas ceasefire.”
He reiterated his call for a ceasefire over Christmas.
"Maybe they will listen to us, and we will have 24 hours, a full day of peace around the world," he said.
He then invited everyone, especially during this Christmas season, to reflect on the nature of human life and the value of human life.
"God became a man like us to show us what it means to truly live human life," he said.
