Macedonian minister attacks Albanian students' protest: Macedonian language
Igor Filkov

A day after the massive protest by Albanian students in Skopje for the right to hold the bar exam in Albanian, North Macedonia's Minister of Justice, Igor Filkov, has chosen the language of confrontation rather than dialogue.

Instead of addressing the concerns of thousands of Albanian students, who are demanding respect for their linguistic and constitutional rights, Filkov described the protest as "violent" and warned that he would not allow the "devaluation of the legal system."

" The right to protest is democratic, but no one has the right through violent protests to seek the destruction of criteria and standards in the judiciary. The Ministry of Justice remains open to reasoned institutional dialogue, but will not allow the devaluation of the legal system, nor the burying of the role of the Macedonian language as a pillar of statehood and institutional order ," the minister declared.

But his statement has sparked reactions and criticism, as the Albanian student protest was widely perceived as a civic revolt for equality and not as a threat to the state.

Even more problematic was the minister's message when he declared that "the Macedonian language is not an obstacle, but an obligation", a formulation that, according to critics, ignores the multiethnic reality of North Macedonia and the spirit of the Ohrid Agreement.

" The Macedonian language is not an obstacle, it is obligatory, a constitutional value and a guarantee for the functioning of the state ," said Filkov.

However, Albanian students are not demanding the abolition of the Macedonian language, but the right to study and be tested in Albanian, as an official language recognized by the Constitution.

Instead of offering solutions or opening an institutional debate on a sensitive issue for Albanians, the minister chose to present the protest as an attempt at interethnic tensions and political instrumentalization.

This approach only increases the feeling that the legitimate demands of Albanians continue to be treated as a political problem and not as a constitutional right in a state that claims European standards.
