Extreme weather hits the US

The severe weather, which "showed" its teeth on Saturday morning, has "swept" across the United States, bringing extremely cold temperatures and snowfall that many cities have not seen in more than a century.

More than 220 million people are expected to be affected by the storm, which is expected to end after the weekend.

At least 18 states have declared states of emergency, including Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina and North Carolina. States of emergency declarations have also been made in Missouri, Tennessee, Virginia, Maryland and Pennsylvania.

Three dead

Three people were found dead on the streets of New York City due to freezing temperatures. According to police, a 67-year-old man was found on a sidewalk in Manhattan this morning, while two other bodies, a 30-year-old man and a 60-year-old woman, were found separately in Brooklyn about 2 hours after the first reports.

More than 13,000 flights were canceled due to the winter storm. Many of the cancellations involved flights to and from Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport, with nearly 1,500 flights canceled, and Love Field, with 190 cancellations, representing the largest portion of the flight schedule at each airport.

More than 135,000 homes were left without power across the country, with most outages reported as of Saturday afternoon in southern states such as Texas, Louisiana and New Mexico.

Public transportation continues to be disrupted due to severe weather. New Jersey Transit bus, light rail and Access Link services will be temporarily suspended starting early Sunday morning.

Capital Metro in Austin, Texas, suspended all services in the city as of 4 p.m. Saturday, while thousands of National Guard soldiers from 12 states have been put on standby to deal with the severe weather, according to the head of the service, General Steven Nordhaus.
