Tech billionaire Elon Musk has long been considered one of US President Donald Trump's biggest supporters.
In the run-up to the 2024 presidential election, the two men forged a mutually beneficial friendship. Musk funded Trump's campaign with at least $250 million, helping him defeat Democratic candidate Kamala Harris.
Later, Trump appointed Musk to head a newly created Office of Government Efficiency, or DOGE, and gave him more or less complete freedom to investigate “waste, fraud, and abuse” within US government departments and agencies with the aim of cutting spending.
But the relationship between the two eccentric billionaires took a turn when Musk's car company, Tesla, reported declining financial figures, in part due to Musk's support for the MAGA movement.
Musk initially withdrew from politics to focus on his companies. However, he soon began publicly criticizing Trump. Among other things, Musk disliked the "Big and Beautiful Bill." Trump, in turn, attacked Musk, and in June, the tension culminated in a public feud.
Musk accused Trump of keeping the release of the Epstein files a secret because the US president himself could be implicated in them. However, Trump threatened to terminate Musk's contracts with the US government. In early July, Musk announced his intention to found his own political party, the "American Party".
But now there seems to be a new side to the friendship or enmity. According to several media reports, Musk is said to have donated several million dollars to three Political Action Committees (PACs), that is, lobbying groups that support political candidates, in this case US President Donald Trump and the Republican Party.
The British newspaper Daily Mail was the first to report the donations last Friday. The American magazine Newsweek later managed to research the names of the PACs. According to the report, Musk donated $5 million each to MAGA Inc., the Senate Leadership Fund and the House Leadership Fund. All three donations were made on June 27, about a week before Musk announced the formation of his American Party.
His most recent donations to date were to AMERICA PAC, including a $27 million donation on June 30.
He also donated several thousand dollars to the campaigns of Republican representatives Marjorie Taylor Greene and Barry Moore.
