US President Donald Trump may discuss the possibility of the country's withdrawal from NATO during a meeting with the alliance's Secretary General, Mark Rutte, the White House confirmed.
According to a statement from spokeswoman Caroline Leavitt, Trump has criticized NATO allies, saying they were "tested and failed" during the conflict with Iran and did not offer support to the United States.
"He added that it's quite sad that NATO has turned its back on the American people over the last six weeks, when it is the American people who have funded its defense ," Leavitt said during a press conference.
Trump is expected to hold a meeting in the Oval Office with Rutte, where, according to the White House, a "very candid" conversation will take place.
Asked if the US is still considering withdrawing from NATO, Leavitt said that this is an issue that the president has discussed and that could be part of the talks with the head of the alliance.
However, any decision to withdraw from NATO requires the approval of the US Congress, a scenario considered unlikely.
Meanwhile, according to Reuters reporting, several European leaders welcomed the announcement of a two-week ceasefire between the US and Iran, stressing that their countries will contribute to guaranteeing freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz.
