NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte has reiterated the importance of the United States' role in European security, speaking out against the idea of the European Union moving towards full strategic autonomy from Washington.
In an interview with the German agency DPA, Rutte said that it is natural for European countries to gradually take on more responsibility for the defense of the continent, but this, according to him, should happen within the framework of NATO and with the US present in the alliance.
"It is quite logical that we are gradually taking on more responsibility for European defense, but at the same time the US, which fully supports NATO, remains in the alliance and in Europe ," he said.
Rutte also emphasized that the concept of security in Europe is not limited to the European Union.
"When we talk about Europe and NATO, it is more than just the EU ," the Secretary General added.
He recalled the decisions taken at the NATO summit held this summer in The Hague, where member countries agreed to increase defense spending to 5% of Gross Domestic Product by 2035. According to Rutte, this decision represents an important political achievement.
" I believe that to date, this is one of the greatest foreign policy successes of US President Donald Trump ," he declared.
Rutte's stance seems to place emphasis on transatlantic cooperation and strengthening NATO as the main foundation of collective defense, rather than the creation of parallel security structures in Europe.
