UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer has assured Cypriot authorities that the British air base RAF Akrotiri will not be included in the agreement with the United States for the use of bases in the context of "collective self-defense".
According to Sky News, Starmer held a conversation with the President of Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulides, following an Iranian ballistic missile attack on the joint British-American base on Diego Garcia.
In a statement, a Downing Street spokesman said the British prime minister stressed the importance of Cyprus' security, describing it as a close partner and friend of the United Kingdom.
" RAF Akrotiri will not be involved in the continuation of the UK's agreement with the US for the use of British bases in the context of collective self-defense in the region, including operations aimed at weakening Iran's missile capabilities ," the statement said.
This stance comes at a time of heightened tensions in the region, as the United Kingdom seeks to balance military commitments with the concerns of its allies.
