Kamala Harris

Kamala Harris on Thursday defended some of her centrist policy changes and said she may appoint a Republican to the Cabinet if elected.

Ms. Harris made the comments in her first interview with a major television network since the Democrats nominated her for president.

" I think the most important and significant aspect of my policy perspective and decisions is that my principles have not changed ," she told CNN's Dana Bash during the interview, parts of which were released before she airs in full at 9:00 p.m., Washington local time.

Ms. Harris has positioned herself more toward the center on several issues since she ran for president in 2020.

She has toughened her stance on immigration along the southern US border with Mexico. She also already opposes a ban on oil drilling, which employs many people in Pennsylvania, one of the few states that will be decisive in determining the outcome of the election.

" My principles about what we need to do to secure our border - they haven't changed. I served two terms as California attorney general prosecuting transnational criminal organizations, US lawbreakers, who have been illegally trafficking weapons , drugs and human beings across our border, and my principles have not changed ," she said.

Ms. Harris's interview was intended to show that she was in control of all the issues. Some critics suggest she may be less refined in settings where she doesn't have a scripted speech, after a string of powerful campaign speeches since taking over the Democratic baton for the White House race.

Ms. Harris, along with Democratic vice-presidential candidate Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, also discussed the possibility of bringing a Republican into her potential cabinet, saying she wanted a diversity of opinions.

" I think it's important to have at the table when some of the most important decisions are made, people who have different views and experiences. And I think it would be in the best interest of the American public to have a member of my cabinet who was a Republican ," she said.

Vice President Harris has avoided official interviews and press conferences during her rapid rise to run on behalf of the Democrats for the post of president./ VOA
