Sudden changes in the Greek government, Mitsotakis dismisses the Minister of
Kyriakos Mitsotakis

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis named a new Civil Defense minister on Wednesday as part of a cabinet reshuffle aimed at strengthening his conservative government ahead of reforms expected this year.

A government official said earlier that the prime minister, who was re-elected in June 2023 and has an eight-seat lead in the 300-seat parliament, was seeking to make "specifically targeted changes".

Mitsotakis kept the main ministers in the same posts to signal the continuity of policies on the economy and foreign affairs.

He replaced several ministers including Michalis Chrysohoidis, who left the Ministry of Health to take charge of the Ministry of Civil Defense, which oversees the police, replacing Giannis Oikonomo. Adonis Georgiadis moved from the Ministry of Labor to the Ministry of Health.

Chrysohoidis has held the post of Minister of Civil Defense several times in the last two decades and was leading this ministry when Greece destroyed in 2002 the deadliest guerilla group in Greece, November 17.

His reappointment follows a series of violent incidents, including the death of a 31-year-old police officer who was injured in clashes that broke out during a volleyball match last month.

Earlier in the week, Mitsotakis said that 2024 will be the start of a new era for the country, which needs "a rapid wave of change" and that he believes that the European Parliament elections, which are expected to be held this year, will reconfirm political stability.

The Greek prime minister has promised to legalize same-sex marriage and his government is expected to present a draft law that paves the way for the operation of private universities in the country. Both reforms are likely to face opposition.
