In an appearance at the National Bar Association gala, a network of predominantly African-American lawyers and judges, Joe Biden sharply criticized Donald Trump's administration.
The former US president warned from Chicago that the executive branch appears to be "doing its best to dismantle the Constitution". He added that he is supported by a Congress "that just sits on the sidelines" and by the Supreme Court, whose decisions he harshly criticized, saying: "the decisions they've made, oh my God".
There are moments in life so profound that they divide everything into a before and an after.
"In my opinion, we are at such a point in American history - evident in every cruel administrative overreach, every violation of fundamental freedoms, every dismantling of long-established principles of law," Biden said.
In his speech, Biden repeatedly referred to Trump as "that guy," without using his name. He stressed that many Americans now understand the importance of judicial checks on the executive branch. "Judges matter. Courts matter. The law matters and the Constitution matters," he said.
He even warned: "Get ready, people, this has just begun."
According to Biden, the current administration wants to "undo all the progress I've made in my time" and "erase history instead of making it ourselves." Biden made it clear that, in his opinion, it's no longer just about political differences: "People, we can't sugarcoat this. These are dark days, but you're all here for the same reason. Our future is literally at stake."
Biden has largely withdrawn from public life since his term in office and lives primarily in Delaware. He is currently being treated for an aggressive form of prostate cancer and is working on a new book.
