The German media outlet Handelsblatt estimates that the US and Israel's war against Iran is entering a phase without clear strategic results, describing the situation as a risk of turning into an "epic failure." The German magazine Handelsblatt has devoted a critical analysis to the war between the United States and Israel against Iran, which has entered its third week without a clear result. On its cover, the media uses the phrase “Epic Failure,” contrasting it with the operation called “Epic Fury.”
According to the analysis, this formulation may represent a harsh assessment of a conflict that is proving increasingly costly for Washington. The debate also mentioned the interpretation of journalist Max Blumenthal, who suggested that the escalation of the conflict may have also served to shift attention from political discussions in the US, including the issue of the so-called “Epstein Files”.
In this context, the analysis highlights the importance of the attacks on Kharg Island, a key Iranian oil export hub. The strike on military infrastructure in this area aims to push the limits of pressure on Iran, especially since the US, according to estimates, has not yet managed to influence control of the Strait of Hormuz, which remains under a form of strategic deterrence by Iran.
The airstrikes carried out between March 13 and 14, which reportedly hit around 90 Iranian targets, are seen as part of a strategy that some analysts link to the Trump administration's foreign policy approach. The New York Times has described the approach as "destroy and deal," a military strike aimed at forcing an adversary into negotiations.
The attacks on Kharg could also have a broader geopolitical dimension, as Iranian energy infrastructure is linked to supplying international markets, including China, one of the main importers of Iranian oil.
Different objectives between the US and Israel
The analysis also notes that the US and Israel appear to have different strategic objectives. Israel has openly stated that it aims for maximum weakening of Iran and political change in Tehran, while the United States faces greater strategic and economic constraints.
Political debates over the conflict have also emerged in Washington. Democratic Senator Chris Murphy has stated that the US administration has not clearly defined its ultimate objectives in this war, noting that it has not been clarified whether the goal is to eliminate the Iranian nuclear program or to change the regime.
According to Murphy, the administration has not even presented a concrete plan to guarantee the opening of the Strait of Hormuz, a key point for global energy trade.
Political and economic pressures in the US
The analysis highlights that the conflict could also create domestic political pressures for Donald Trump. Within the MAGA movement, criticism has emerged from figures like Tucker Carlson, who see involvement in a new war as a departure from the isolationist rhetoric of the campaign.
At the same time, rising energy prices and the risk of inflation could affect political support for the administration. A CNN poll shows that approval of Trump's economic policies has fallen sharply, from a positive margin to a negative rating.
Analysts such as Sanam Vakil from Chatham House have warned in the Financial Times that even in the event of military success, it is impossible to guarantee political change in Iran, emphasizing that regimes supported by strong security structures have often shown high resilience.
In this context, attacks on the Iranian energy sector, especially in Kharg, present a strategic dilemma for the US. Hitting Iranian oil exports could weaken Tehran and affect supplies to China, but at the same time it risks destabilizing global energy markets and increasing inflationary pressure in the United States. /Pamphlet
