Tehran announced that ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz must use alternative sea corridors to avoid collisions with mines and ensure the safety of navigation...

Iran announced on Thursday the mandatory establishment of alternative routes for ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz, due to the risk of naval mines.

Tehran confirmed that the maritime corridor, through which about 1/5 of the world's oil passes, has resumed operations with restrictions, after a blockade that began in early March and has put pressure on global energy prices.

In a statement, the Revolutionary Guard said all ships intending to pass through the Strait of Hormuz must use alternative routes, in order to comply with maritime safety regulations and protect against possible mine collisions.

Iranian authorities also presented a navigation plan that envisions an entry route to the Persian Gulf from the Sea of Oman, in a northerly direction, passing near Larak Island, as well as an exit route to the Gulf of Oman from the south of the same island. Both corridors will be coordinated by the Iranian navy.

According to the Tasnim agency, close to the Iranian military elite, ships passing through the strait must coordinate their movements with the Revolutionary Guard and, until further notice, use alternative routes for passage through this strategic artery.

The announcement came after the ceasefire agreement reached between Washington and Tehran from Tuesday to Wednesday, less than an hour before the deadline that US President Donald Trump had set for an attack on Iran, if an agreement to reopen the strait was not accepted.

After a drop in maritime traffic of up to 97 percent since the start of the war on February 28, movement in the strait showed signs of recovery following the ceasefire agreement, which is expected to enable safer passage through the waterway.

However, that same day, Tehran announced the interruption of oil tanker navigation in response to Israeli bombing in Lebanon, a claim that the White House denied.

The reopening of Hormuz has been a central demand of the international community and, in particular, of the US president, who has repeatedly warned that he would strike Iranian infrastructure if traffic in the strait was not restored.
