The United Nations' top expert on Palestinian rights, Francesca Albanese, has said that Israel is trying to make it impossible for people to live in Gaza City. The Israeli military has launched an assault on the city, where it says Hamas is entrenched in parts of the infrastructure.
"Israel is bombing using unconventional weapons... it is trying to forcibly evacuate Palestinians. Why? This is the last part of Gaza that must be made unlivable before the ethnic cleansing of that part of the land can progress ," said Francesca Albanese.
Her comments were rejected by Israel's Permanent Mission to the UN, which said in a statement that she has shown a willingness to strike Israel.
"Her numerous statements have shown her willingness to go to extreme measures in delegitimizing the State of Israel. According to her, Hamas does not integrate itself into civilian infrastructure, does not cynically use civilians as human shields, and generally does not really exist ," the Israeli mission to the UN said.
Israel says it has warned civilians to go south, to a designated humanitarian zone. But the UN and many countries say its tactics amount to mass forced displacement.
Albanese serves as the special rapporteur on human rights in the occupied Palestinian territories, one of dozens of experts appointed by the 47-member UN Human Rights Council to report on specific global issues.
