Orban threatens Ukraine: We will stop electricity exports

Hungary is considering suspending electricity and gas exports to Ukraine if Kiev does not restore Russian oil supplies through the Druzhba pipeline, Prime Minister Viktor Orban's chief of staff said on Thursday.

Hungary and Slovakia remain the only two European Union countries operating refineries adapted to process Russian oil. Both countries are seeking to secure their supplies after the flow of oil was cut off on January 27. According to the Ukrainian side, the interruption was caused by a Russian drone attack that caused damage to the pipeline infrastructure.

Refineries in the region plan to use state oil reserves to cope with the situation. The Slovak government on Wednesday approved a "loan" of 250,000 tons from strategic reserves.

The Hungarian government also announced that it has made part of its strategic oil reserves available, following a request from the refining company MOL.

Prime Minister Viktor Orban has publicly opposed Ukraine's membership in the European Union. Both Hungary and Slovakia have maintained stable relations with Russian President Vladimir Putin during the conflict in Ukraine, which is approaching its fourth year.
