The trade deal reached between the United States and the European Union has been welcomed with enthusiasm in Germany, one of the EU's largest economies and the continent's leading car manufacturer. The decision avoids the imposition of punitive tariffs threatened by the Trump administration, which would have severely affected German exports, especially the car and machinery industry.
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz welcomed the agreement as “a positive development that averted a damaging trade conflict.” He stressed that “the German economy, especially the automotive sector, would have suffered a severe blow in the event of the 30% tariffs announced by the US.”
However, Merz warned that this is not the end of Germany's commitment to freer trade. "I will continue to push for the reduction of tariffs and the elimination of trade barriers, including in other agreements with international partners," he told Reuters.
According to the German Association of Machinery and Engineering, if the punitive 30% tariffs were to come into effect, many companies would face a serious risk to their existence. The new agreement is expected to stabilize transatlantic trade and provide a more stable environment for German exporters, especially in the automotive sector, one of the main engines of the German economy.
