Protests erupted in several cities in France on Thursday, as strikes caused the Paris Metro to be blocked, causing transportation problems.
The protests are challenging the government of President Emmanuel Macron and its proposals to cut funding for public services.
In Paris, police used tear gas since the early hours of the morning to disperse protesters. Police have arrested more than 50 people in Paris and other French cities, Le Figaro reports.
CGT union leader Sophie Binet told local media that the strong police presence requested by the outgoing interior minister was "adding fuel to the fire," adding that the police response was too harsh.
She has also called on more people to join the protest, underlining the "fragility" of the new prime minister and the need to respond to social demands.
Labor unions that called the strikes are pressing for the abandonment of proposed budget cuts, welfare freezes and other austerity measures that opponents claim will further hit the pockets of low-wage and middle-class workers and which have caused the downfall of successive governments.
