The head of the British Armed Forces has stated that Russia's invasion of Ukraine highlights that European countries are not as safe as they once were.
" This conflict reminds us that peace is never guaranteed. It [the United Kingdom] must be defended, and sometimes at great cost ," said Marshal Sir Richard Knighton.
He said that defending the country is not "just the responsibility of the military," but rather a "national effort" that requires investment, innovation and support for the armed forces.
On Sunday Morning With Trevor Phillips, Sir Richard sounded more optimistic about the state of the war in Ukraine. " Mr Putin is now losing hundreds of thousands of soldiers. His nation is spending somewhere around 40% of its national income on defence. Strategically Putin is seeing his war aims being destroyed. We have a stronger NATO, a NATO that is rearming and it is bigger ," he said.
