Following Iran's reaction, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has also come out against US President Donald Trump's statements towards Pope Leo XIV, describing them as unacceptable.
In a public response, Meloni emphasized the Pope's role as a spiritual leader and defended his positions on peace.
"I find President Trump's words to the Holy Father unacceptable. The Pope is the head of the Catholic Church and it is right and appropriate that he calls for peace and condemns all forms of war," she said.
The Italian leader's reaction comes after Trump harshly criticized Pope Leo, calling him "terrible" for his foreign policy positions, especially after the Pope's calls for peace, ceasefires and a cessation of conflicts.
The US president's statements came shortly after the Pope condemned threats against Iran, stressing the need for dialogue and avoiding escalation of the situation.
