The release by Hamas and its ally, Islamic Jihad, of videos showing two Israeli hostages has revived public debate in Israel over the need to reach an agreement for their release as soon as possible.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said he was "shocked" by recent videos released by Hamas showing hostages in the Gaza Strip and spoke to families, in a country shaken by the images.
Tens of thousands of people gathered in Tel Aviv last night in support of the families and to demand the release of the hostages, reflecting the emotion that has once again gripped the country.
In the propaganda footage of the two Islamist organizations, the two hostages appear very weakened and exhausted, in a scene that is designed to draw a parallel with the current humanitarian situation in Gaza, which is threatened by "general famine" according to the UN.
The image of a hostage digging a hole in the ground with a shovel inside a tunnel where he is being held, pretending to dig his own grave, has caused shock.
"Hamas militants are deliberately starving residents in the Gaza Strip, preventing them from receiving aid and repeating a false propaganda campaign against Israel," the Israeli prime minister confirmed, calling on "the countries of the world to mobilize to unequivocally condemn the criminal Nazi abuses of the Hamas terrorist organization."

Israeli President Isaac Herzog and Foreign Minister Gideon Saar reacted similarly, with the latter announcing that he had "sent an urgent message to his colleagues around the world" and "took the initiative to hold a special meeting of the United Nations Security Council" on the issue.
At the same time, the head of European diplomacy, Kaia Kalas, condemned today the "shocking images of Israeli hostages", whose "immediate" release she demanded.
Emmanuel Macron denounced in X the "shameful cruelty" and "unlimited inhumanity" of Hamas, following the recent releases of videos of Israeli hostages held in Gaza, where they appear weakened and exhausted.
"A shameful cruelty, an unlimited inhumanity: this is what Hamas embodies. The unbearable images showing the Israeli hostages held in Gaza are a terrible reminder of this," writes the French president, who underlines that "the priority and absolute imperative is the immediate release of all hostages."
The French head of state says he thinks "with emotion of Aviatar David, Rom Braslavsky, all the hostages still being held, as well as their families and loved ones who have been immersed in hell for more than 660 days."
Emmanuel Macron promised to continue to "act without interruption" to "achieve this unconditional release, to implement a ceasefire without delay and to allow the massive distribution of humanitarian aid, which remains blocked outside Gaza."
Meanwhile, Paris is continuing its operations, which began on Friday, with the airlift of humanitarian aid. A total of forty tons of goods are expected to be airlifted from France to the Palestinian enclave, which is threatened by a "general famine," according to the UN.
