Greek authorities have arrested a senior member of an international gang that smuggles fuel products from Latin America and sells them illegally around the world, making a profit of more than $21 billion.
The gang member, of Italian nationality, for whom INTERPOL had issued an arrest warrant, was found on the outskirts of Athens on Friday, a police official told Reuters. The official spoke on condition of anonymity.
According to the arrest warrant, the detainee will be extradited to Venezuela, where he will face various charges, including illegal transportation of strategically important resources.
The gang stole fuel products, which were loaded into oil tankers, from ports in Latin America.
This criminal gang profited more than 21 billion dollars from smuggling, harming both the shipping companies and the states, the police said. /REL
