Over 40 people were involved in the conflict; witnesses cite financial disputes as a possible cause
A violent brawl between more than 40 people at a gurdwara (Sikh temple) in the German city of Moers ended with at least 11 injured and a major police operation, in which special units were also deployed.
According to the Bild newspaper, the incident took place on Sunday at the Gurdwara Singh Sabha in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia. Reports indicate that participants used pepper spray, knives, kirpans (traditional Sikh weapons) and, according to some sources, even a firearm.
German authorities have not yet confirmed the exact cause of the conflict. However, witnesses told Bild that the clash may have stemmed from a disagreement over financial matters and the management of the temple.
According to the same sources, the fight began in the afternoon and quickly escalated. One group is suspected of launching a coordinated attack, first using pepper spray to disorient opponents and then other violent means.
A 56-year-old witness told Bild that the attack appeared to be planned: he stated that shortly before the prayer, several people used pepper spray and one of them fired a gun, while knives were also seen at the scene.
A Gurdwara is a place of worship for Sikhs and serves as a religious and community center. The word means "gateway to the Guru."
Police are continuing their investigations to uncover the full circumstances of the incident.
