Clashes and arrests in Israel during protest against war with Iran

At least 18 people have been arrested during protests against the war with Iran that took place in several major Israeli cities, according to a police statement.

The arrests were made in Tel Aviv and Haifa, with 13 protesters detained in the former city and five in the latter. Demonstrations also took place in Jerusalem and Be'er Sheva.

The protests mark a new development, as for the first time broader opposition groups are participating in anti-war mobilizations. In the early weeks of the conflict, such rallies were mainly organized by left-wing activists.

In Haifa, about 100 people took part in the protest, waving Israeli flags and chanting against the continued fighting. A banner held by one protester read: "Millions of children are growing up in shelters."

According to police, some participants attempted to block a road, leading to the rally being declared illegal by the commander on the scene. Authorities report that they arrested those who violated the rules, although footage from the protest suggests that at least two of those detained were not obstructing traffic at the time of their arrest.

A similar protest in Tel Aviv's Habima Square was dispersed by police after it was deemed illegal, in accordance with wartime Home Front Command regulations, which limit public gatherings in open spaces to up to 50 people.

The police stated that the decision to disperse the protest was made after an assessment of the situation on the ground, where a real risk to people's lives was determined.
