Hamas has said its leader Ismail Haniyeh was killed in his home in Tehran in an Israeli raid.
Hamas has announced the death of its leader, Ismail Haniyeh, after an Israeli attack on his residence in Tehran.
The attack happened at 2:00 am local time and the news was confirmed by the Palestinian militant group Hamas.
Haniyeh's death comes hours after Israel said it killed a senior Hezbollah commander in an attack in the Lebanese capital Beirut.
Attacks on two senior Iranian-backed militant leaders in the space of 24 hours have raised fears that the region could soon be embroiled in further conflict.
Haniyeh had been the head of Hamas' political bureau since 2017. He also served as prime minister of the Palestinian National Authority from 2006 to 2007 and head of the Gaza Strip administration from 2014 to 2017.
"A cowardly act and a dangerous development," said Palestinian President Abu Mazen, who condemned the killing of the Hamas political leader, calling on "the Palestinian people and popular forces for unity, patience and determination in the face of the Israeli occupation."
The killing of the Hamas leader represents a serious escalation that will not achieve its objectives, the Islamist faction's official Sami Abu Zuhri said, quoted by Israeli media.
"The killing of commander Ismail Haniyeh is a cowardly act and will not go unnoticed," added Musa Abou Marzouk, one of Hamas's most senior leaders, in one of the first statements.
Iran's Revolutionary Guards said they are "investigating the incident of the death of Hamas political leader Ismail Haniyeh and will announce the results of the investigation later."
A senior Hamas official said the group would respond to Haniyeh's killing, calling it "a cowardly act that will not go unpunished."
Israel has repeatedly vowed to "destroy" senior figures within the Hamas leadership following the October 7 attack.
