Some doctors in Gaza have performed operations, including amputations, without anesthesia, a spokesman for the World Health Organization said on Tuesday.
"Nothing justifies the horror that civilians in Gaza are enduring," WHO spokesman Christian Lindmeier said Tuesday during a press conference in Geneva, stressing "their desperate need for water, fuel, food and safe access in health care to survive".
Lindmeier repeated the United Nations' calls for "unhindered and safe access" for around 500 aid trucks a day - not just across the border but also "up to patients in hospitals", where operations including amputations were carried out. performed without anesthesia.
"The level of death and suffering is hard to fathom," he added.
Lindmeier also said that at least 16 health care workers have been killed in the line of duty, stressing that any attack on health care is prohibited by international humanitarian law.
Doctors Without Borders, also known as Médecins Sans Frontières, said on Tuesday that one of its colleagues and several of his family members were killed in an explosion in the Al Shati refugee camp.
Mohammed Al Ahel, an MSF laboratory technician, and several members of his family died in the explosion on Monday, the organization said.
MSF said in a statement that it is "extremely concerned for all our colleagues in Gaza, many of whom are still working in hospitals across the Strip providing life-saving care."
The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) also said on Tuesday that its humanitarian convoy was attacked while delivering essential medical supplies to health facilities in Gaza City.
According to the ICRC, two trucks were damaged in the attack and one driver suffered minor injuries.
"These are not the conditions in which humanitarian personnel can work. We are here to bring urgent aid to civilians in need.
