Poland is planning to give its remaining Soviet-era MiG-29 fighter jets to Ukraine in exchange for drone technology, the Defense Ministry announced on December 10. Poland has replaced its aging Soviet-made aircraft with American-made F-16s and South Korean-made FA-50s and is awaiting delivery of 32 F-35 jets it has ordered from the United States.
"The MiGs are reaching the end of their service life, which means they will be withdrawn from the Polish army and we are discussing their transfer to the Ukrainian side ," Defense Minister Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz told Polish public radio Trojka.
According to Kosiniak-Kamysz, this exchange could also include 'the transfer of technologies, for example in the field of drones and missiles from Ukraine to Poland'.
Poland, which gave many of its MiG-29 jets to Ukraine after Moscow launched its invasion of the neighboring country, still has 14 of the aircraft, according to media reports.
"Negotiations are continuing, and we are determined to finalize them as soon as possible," Kosiniak-Kamysz stressed.
He added that Poland is already benefiting from Ukrainian expertise in military drone training. “The Ukrainians are the best when it comes to drones among all the countries with which we have good relations,” the defense minister said.
Poland, a member of the European Union and NATO, is among Ukraine's strongest supporters, serving as a hub for military and humanitarian shipments to Kiev./REL
