Portugal has officially recognized the state of Palestine, Foreign Minister Paulo Rangel announced on Sunday, September 21. The move is in line with similar decisions taken by the United Kingdom, Canada and Australia, and precedes the expected recognition by other countries, such as France, on Monday.
The Portuguese minister made the statement from New York, just before the start of the annual UN General Assembly. "The recognition of the State of Palestine is the culmination of a fundamental and widely accepted policy," he told reporters.
"Portugal supports the two-state solution as the only path towards a just and lasting peace," he added, emphasizing that this solution is the only one that can promote peaceful coexistence and relations between Israel and Palestine.
The Palestinian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Emigrants, in an official statement, said that it welcomes the decision of the Republic of Portugal to recognize the State of Palestine, considering it a bold step that is in line with international law and United Nations resolutions, and that strengthens the ongoing efforts to achieve peace and promote the two-state solution.
