The US Secret Service and the Department of Homeland Security are investigating an Instagram post by former FBI Director James Comey that read "8647."
“86” is a slang term that can mean “to get rid of,” and some use it to mean “to kill” — something President Trump’s eldest son, Donald Trump Jr., hinted at on X as he shared a screenshot of Comey’s since-deleted post with the comment, “Just James Comey making causal calls for my father to be killed.”
Comey wrote in the post accompanying the photo to his 130,000 Instagram followers: "Awesome shell formation during my walk on the beach."
A trend has emerged of placing the number "86" alongside "47," reflecting Trump's current term in the historic tally of U.S. presidents as a means of resistance, the Detroit Free Press noted.
Comey in an updated post clarified that the shells were "a political message" but "didn't understand that some people associate those numbers with violence."
"Former FBI Director James Comey just called for the assassination" of Trump, Noem said on X's show Thursday night. "DHS and the Secret Service are investigating this threat and will respond appropriately," Noem said.
USSS spokesman Anthony Guglielmi explained that the Secret Service "vigorously investigates anything that could be perceived as a potential threat against protected persons."
"We take this responsibility very seriously and are aware of the social media posts in question. Beyond that, we do not comment on matters of defense intelligence," Guglielmi added.
Meanwhile, FBI Director Kash Patel told X that the Bureau is aware of Comey's post and is in communication with the USSS and its director Sean Curran.
The controversy, as expected, also involved MAGA supporters beyond senior administration officials, with social media posts lamenting "Democrat political violence."
Comey was appointed FBI director by former President Obama, but he was a registered Republican for years. He told ABC News in 2018, a year after Trump fired him as FBI director, that "the Republican Party has ousted me and many others."
Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard told Fox News on Thursday that she is "very concerned for the president's life," noting that "we've already seen assassination attempts."
She added that "Comey, in my opinion, should be held accountable and put behind bars for this."
Taylor Budowich, the White House deputy chief of staff and Cabinet secretary, on X called Comey's post "deeply troubling to all of us" and said it is being taken seriously.
"While President Trump is currently on an international trip to the Middle East, the former FBI director delivers what could clearly be interpreted as 'a jab' at the sitting President of the United States - a message carved in sand," Budowicz said.
Rep. Tim Burchett (R-Tenn.) wrote on X, "Arrest Comey."
