Pressure from outside does not convince the Macedonian opposition for

Neither the messages of the Secretary General of NATO, Jens Stoltenberg, nor of other senior international officials, have swayed the VMRO DPMNE from its opposing stance on the constitutional changes.

The changes that must be made for the inclusion of the Bulgarian minority in its preamble, as a state-forming people, are the main condition for the continuation of the talks on the European integration of North Macedonia.

The decision must be approved before the EU summit in December, so that the green light can be given for the start of talks on the chapters.

" All political parties have a responsibility to work together and move the country forward. Therefore, I encourage you to be persistent and work continuously to complete your journey in the European family of nations, just as you have worked for NATO membership, " said the head of NATO, Stoltenberg, before the deputies.

Similar messages were sent by other high-ranking European and American officials, drawing attention to the risk to security and stability if the country does not continue on the path of European integration.

But, despite this, VMRO DPMNE, which is led by Hristijan Mickoski, says that constitutional changes can only be made after new parliamentary elections, and after its victory, while it then claims that it will manage to make a more favorable agreement with Bulgaria.

Mickoski claims that the agreement that was reached based on what is known as the "French proposal" harms Macedonian national interests.

" The way these constitutional changes are planned to be done greatly endangers our national interests, or Macedonia's position in the context of progress towards full membership in the European Union. There will be no constitutional changes under the Bulgarian diktat ," said Mickovski.

Despite the "concrete" stance of the opposition, the parties in power say that they will not "surrender" until the last minute, since, according to them, the integration of North Macedonia into the EU cannot have an alternative.

Prime Minister Dimitar Kovacevski, after the meeting with NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, said that "those who oppose the constitutional changes are against the country's European future".

" If those, who have always been against the country's integration into NATO and the EU, manage to overcome themselves, then at the EU summit in December we will have a decision to start talks with the EU. If we do not do this, then we will have a repeat of the 11 past EU summits when we had no decision for our country. The VMRO with its current leaders is continuing with Nikola Gruevski's isolation policies ", Kovacevski declared.

The situation for securing two-thirds of the votes in the Assembly is also complicated by the decision of the Albanian opposition parties not to support the constitutional changes. This decision was taken by the Albanian parties due to the rejection of their request that the changes include the "new definition for the Albanian language", which is recognized in the Constitution as a language spoken by more than 20 percent of the population of North Macedonia. .

Political insiders do not expect the changes to be approved by the current parliamentary composition as all attention is now focused on new parliamentary elections.

Analyst Petar Arsovski says that even the international pressure will decrease gradually, taking into account the positions of the political parties, especially the Macedonian opposition.

" The pressure of the international community will not change, but over time there will be a decrease. I am not optimistic that the constitutional changes will be able to be made by this parliamentary composition. Now as if all the attention is focused on the upcoming elections, therefore even the constitutional changes are being talked about less and less ", says Arsovski.

He, meanwhile, expresses pessimism if even after the elections there will be movement due to other political circumstances, first of all due to the elections for the European Parliament in June.

" The general environment will be less favorable than the one we have now for the adoption of constitutional changes. In June 2024, we have the elections for the European Parliament, so on this topic, that is, the debate on constitutional changes will not be able to return before September of the next year, but even then I do not believe that we will have the pressure we have now " , says analyst Petar Arsovski./ REL
