Hungary's nationalist leader Viktor Orbán has said he will open "a few bottles of champagne" if Donald Trump returns to the White House next month.
The Hungarian prime minister will host other EU leaders for a summit in Budapest days after the US presidential election on November 5.
"We will open a few bottles of champagne if Trump comes back," Orbán said on Tuesday, describing the November EU summit as a moment for the bloc to come together "to try to find a common voice."
Orbán said that Trump, if elected president, would not wait until his inauguration, but would act immediately "to manage a peace" between Ukraine and Russia.
He added: "We must react first intellectually, philosophically and then strategically."
Trump has repeatedly claimed that he could bring peace to Ukraine "very quickly," without offering any details on how a lasting solution might be reached.
" I am personally convinced that there is no solution on the battlefield and I think that the strategy that we follow as the European Union is not good, what we are doing is only defeat, defeat and defeat ", said Orban.
Senior EU leaders have repeatedly said that negotiations on the future of Ukraine can only take place with the participation of Kiev.
