At a time when Iran's foreign minister had already left Islamabad, President Donald Trump attempted to move forward with an uncertain plan to send Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff to Pakistan for a meeting with Iranian representatives.
Earlier in the day, just hours before the close of US markets, Trump's spokesman said that the Iranian side had requested a meeting and had shown "progress." However, this was disputed by Iran, which denied any plans to meet with the US delegation.
Iranian authorities have made it clear that Abbas Araghchi would hold talks only with Pakistani mediators, ruling out a direct dialogue with the US.
Even from a logistical point of view, such a meeting was difficult to accomplish, as the American delegation was about 17 hours away, making it impossible to arrive in time before the Iranians left.
The situation was further complicated by the involvement of Witkoff, who does not enjoy the trust of Iranian negotiators.
It is not clear whether this is a miscalculation by Trump or a lack of willingness on the part of Iran to compromise. Despite this, markets reacted positively to Friday's announcement. A similar development occurred last week, when there was talk of a possible visit to the region by Vice President JD Vance, a plan that also did not materialize.
