US Vice President JD Vance, at a press conference at the White House, spoke about relations between the US and Iran, warning that Washington has "two paths" in the face of the impasse in negotiations.
Vance arrived more than 30 minutes late and replaced press secretary Karoline Leavitt, who is on maternity leave following the birth of her child.
At the start of the conference, he joked with reporters that he had a "cheat sheet" in front of him that told him "who can ask questions and who can't."
Then, the US vice president focused on the issue of Iran, emphasizing that the US administration is initially seeking diplomatic solutions.
"The president has asked us to negotiate aggressively with the Iranians," Vance said.
According to him, the US believes that progress has been made in the negotiations, especially on the issue of nuclear weapons.
"On the core issue of never having a nuclear weapon, we think we've made a lot of progress. We think the Iranians want to make a deal ," he said.
However, Vance warned that there is another alternative if the talks fail.
"There is an option B, and option B is that we can resume the military campaign to continue pursuing America's objectives," the US vice president said.
He added that this is not the preferred choice of the American president nor of Iran.
"This is not what the president wants. And I don't think it's what the Iranians want either. It takes two to tango," Vance declared.
Despite the strong tone, his statements did not bring any new elements on how the US and Iran can break out of the current impasse in negotiations.
