Russian President Vladimir Putin has made a rare appearance for foreign media.
In an interview given to journalist Tucker Carlson, Russian President Vladimir Putin says that it is not in his country's interest to expand the war.
For Russia, he said, neither Poland nor Latvia, the two border countries with them, is a priority. He added that Russia will fight for its interests "to the end".
This is Putin's first interview with an American journalist since before the Russian invasion of Ukraine nearly two years ago. The Kremlin chief said Western leaders had realized it was impossible to inflict a strategic defeat on Russia and were wondering what to do next.
"We are ready for this dialogue", he said.
Putin made the comments in a more than two-hour interview with conservative talk show host Tucker Carlson, which Carlson said took place in Moscow on Tuesday.
Putin spoke in Russian and his comments were translated into English. He devoted a significant portion of the interview to complaining that Ukraine had been on the verge of agreeing to end hostilities at talks in Istanbul in April 2022 but backed off, he said, after Russian troops withdrew from near Kiev.
"Well now let them think about how to change the situation. We are not against this. It would be funny if it were not so sad. This endless mobilization in Ukraine, hysteria, internal problems, sooner or later will result in an agreement," Putin said.
The Russian leader stated that the US had pressing domestic issues to worry about.
"Wouldn't it be better to negotiate with Russia? Make an agreement. Already understanding the situation that is developing today, understanding that Russia will fight for its interests to the end," Putin said.
Washington, which has sent Ukraine more than $110 billion in aid since Russia invaded in February 2022, has made clear it has no interest in talking about Putin's terms. Putin was last officially interviewed by a US media outlet in October 2021, when CNBC's Hadley Gamble spoke with him.
