The President of the European Commission, Ursula von Der Leyen, said that Moscow tries to ignite old conflicts in the Balkans.
During her speech at the Bled Strategic Forum in Slovenia, she added that Putin tends to do this whenever there is progress in the Western Balkans.
Von Der Leyen said that the vast majority of people in the Western Balkans want integration, not fragmentation, and we must not give up.
"Throughout history this region has often been a border between worlds. Between East and West. Between north and south. But its younger generations have chosen a different path. They have chosen to be part of a common European family. They have chosen to travel, trade and flourish alongside their European neighbours.
The current Russian leadership, living in the past, refuses to accept this simple reality. Whenever there is progress towards reconciliation and regional integration in the Western Balkans, the Kremlin tries to rekindle old conflicts. Russia constantly seeks to create divisions between the Western Balkans and between the Western Balkans and the rest of Europe. But the vast majority of people in the Western Balkans want integration, not fragmentation. And we must surrender," said Ursula von Der Leyen.
