The conversation lasted an hour. And "it wasn't easy." Nor could it have been, given that the outcome of the summit under discussion was clear: no ceasefire in Ukraine.
The Axios website, with excellent sources in the US administration, is reconstructing in detail the phone call that took place in recent hours between US President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
1. On the ceasefire, Trump shifts to Putin's position
Trump called Zelensky from Air Force One, which he had flown back to Washington from Alaska after his August 15 summit with Vladimir Putin, focused on seeking peace for Ukraine. He invited him to a face-to-face meeting, which will take place on Monday at the White House.
The new summit is expected to be complicated: the starting point, in fact, is not only the lack of a ceasefire agreement, but also the shift in Trump's own position on the subject.
If, just a few hours before the summit, the American leader declared that he wanted "a ceasefire, as soon as possible, today", and stressed that he would not be "happy if the summit were to close" without this decision, after the meeting Trump has shifted to Putin's position. No cessation of fighting: a "complete" peace agreement must be aimed for. Not only that: the agreement, at this point, must be closed by Ukraine.
2. "He said he could take Donetsk if he wanted"
That's not the only delicate point. According to Axios' reconstruction, Trump relayed to Zelensky what he told Putin about the situation on the ground: that Russia was making significant progress on the front line and that — if it wanted to — it could take the entire Donetsk region and other areas where fighting is taking place.
Zelensky responded to Trump that this was a lie by Putin.
What is clear is that, as written here, the situation on the ground is extremely complicated, but Russia remains three years after the start of the invasion immersed in a grueling war, where any progress, even minimal, on the front costs a staggering number of human lives.
3. "Conditions" on territories
During the call, which lasted an hour, in addition to Zelensky, several European heads of state and government (including Giorgia Meloni) as well as the leaders of NATO and the European Commission, White House advisor Steve Witkoff illustrated Putin's "conditions" on the issue of the exchange of territories.
"The impression is that in exchange for territory, Putin is ready to end the war and promise not to occupy other areas in Ukraine, as well as not to attack other countries," a source told Axios.

Sipas asaj që ka raportuar një funksionar europian për CNN, pjesë e bisedimeve kanë qenë garancitë e sigurisë për Ukrainën, të ngjashme me nenin 5 të NATO-s, megjithëse pa përfshirjen direkte të Aleancës Atlantike – në rast marrëveshjeje paqeje.
Neni 5 i Traktatit të Aleancës Atlantike i referohet parimit të mbrojtjes kolektive të vendeve anëtare të NATO-s: në rast sulmi ndaj një anëtari, të gjithë të tjerët garantojnë sigurinë e tij ushtarake.
Detajet e sakta të propozimit nuk dihen, dhe nuk është e qartë si do të zbatoheshin garancitë. Ajo që dihet është se Trump është treguar hezitues të angazhojë forca apo burime amerikane për mbrojtjen e Ukrainës.
