US President Donald Trump has reacted sharply to his French counterpart Emmanuel Macron, following France's decision not to get involved in operations to secure the Strait of Hormuz.
The clash came after Macron declared that France would not participate in any military mission in the area under the current conditions of the conflict.
"We are not a party to the conflict and for this reason France will never participate in operations to open or liberate the Strait of Hormuz," Macron said.
Asked by reporters in the Oval Office, Trump responded in critical and personal tones towards the French president.
"Well, he's going to be out of office very soon. So we'll have to see. I don't know," Trump said.
His statement comes at a time of rising tensions between the US and some European allies, who have rejected requests to contribute military assets to operations in the Strait of Hormuz.
Trump has previously expressed dissatisfaction with allies, accusing them of a lack of loyalty, despite the continued support the US has given them in the security field over the years.
The next presidential elections in France are scheduled for April 2027, while relations between the two countries appear to be facing another moment of diplomatic tension.
